Vazelon Monastery is a Greek monastery located in the Maçka district of Trabzon. The monastery, built in 270, is located 40 kilometers south of Trabzon city center. Emperor Justinian I requested the repair of the monastery in 565, and since then the monastery has been renovated many times. Vazelon Monastery, one of the oldest known monasteries in history, was dedicated to the Prophet John the Baptist mentioned in the Bible. There is no further information about this imposing place of worship, which makes the monastery even more mysterious. In some sources, it is said that Sumela Monastery was built with the revenues obtained from Vazelon Monastery.
